Not coherent enough for essays

I keep putting off posting, because I keep thinking I’m going to come up with brilliant and erudite things to say about the topics swirling in my brain. That isn’t happening, though, so before everything swirls away, here are the topics under consideration. Perhaps I’ll revisit them later, though that seems unlikely.

1. I wrote up my trip to Emerald City ComicCon over on Fantastic Fangirls. The short version? I loved it.

2. I just finished Elizabeth Wurtzel’s memoir, More, Now, Again.

I wrote up my thoughts on Goodreads — oh, did I mention I joined Goodreads? You can find my reviews here. Anyway, here’s what I wrote:

It’s hard to say what I think of this book. I like it, certainly, but it’s not the kind of thing that lends itself to “like” and “good.” It’s terrifically effective. Reading Wurtzel’s description of what her life of addiction was like while she wrote Bitch makes me feel like I don’t want to read Bitch — however good it may be. I think I’d spend the book pondering Wurtzel in her succession of Florida apartments, or in her publisher’s office, snorting an eightball of coke a day and going out of her mind.

I spent a huge amount of time reading this books laughing in pained recognition of the logic of the addict. I love junkie logic; it’s so damn familiar to me. But I can’t swear that this book will make any kind of sense, or be anything but frustrating, to someone who does not understand that the only important thing on earth is to get the next hit of the drugs that makes you feel sane, that makes you feel normal, that makes you feel less, that makes you feel nothing at all but the chemicals you just inhaled. If you don’t get that, if you’ve never felt that way, then you probably won’t enjoy Wurtzel’s book. God knows I wanted to kick the woman across the room half the time, even in my sympathy.

But her prose is letter-perfect, her honesty forces you to share her life intimately, and her experience of addiction is a compelling read.

3. I also finished Chicks Dig Time Lords. Which was worth the price of admission at least six times over.

4. I got the trade paperback of Heathentown, by Corrine Bechko and Gabe Hardman, while at ECCC. I read it, I like it a lot, I may review it in more depth later.

5. I started watching Fringe. This is going much better than when I tried watching it before. Why? Because I text people, check twitter, and websurf during all the parts having to do with either law enforcement or science — the parts that offend my sensibilities — and I watch all the parts that have to do with relationships and barely-functional families. I am, to no-one’s surprise, really liking Agent Dunham. Also, I would watch Lance Reddick read the phone book, I love his voice so much.

6. Reading More, Now, Again started me thinking about the difference between Keisha and Britney Spears, and why it is I think Keisha is playacting, pretending to be a emotionally disturbed teenage girl, and Britney is not pretending at all. There’s something in “Tik-Tok” that is . . . alive to irony and farce, I suppose. Possibly I’ll write more on that later, but, again, probably not.

7. I want someone who vids to make a vid of the movie Lost and Delirious set to t.A.T.u’s song “All the Things She Said.”

There’s the video. It’s mostly safe for work, if teenage lesbians in schoolgirl uniforms are safe for your work. They stay dressed.
