i know. it takes twice as long to cook anything because you have to pre-wash all the cookware and flatware and plates beforehand. and it's still gross and creepy. just read up on mouse-management this morning & am now afraid of the baby getting salmonella. this weekend: caulk-plus-steel-wool in all identifiable mouse entry points, kitchen and outside foundation. also, emptying any leaves etc. from window wells.

You know, I've heard from a couple other locals that the mice are bad this year. Like you say, it's slightly comforting to know that it's not personal.

But only slightly. I still have mouse poop in every-frikken-damn-drawer in the kitchen.

i am oddly comforted to know we're not the only ones who are losing the Hundred Years' War against mice. now considering getting a cat, even though Molly is somewhat allergic. kinda getting too grossed out to be in our own kitchen though. what is it with mice this fall?!

The hope, and the trust in human ingenuity (for both good and ill purposes), are two things that I really love about Warren Ellis's writing. He can get me to read doom-laden scenarios that I just wouldn't go near with anyone else.

@Cynthia Luckily, the person who recommended the nooks to me *told* me that the author died and there aren't any more than three. :) So I was warned.

@Caroline I think you'd like this book.

I think I have an internal bias, because of my background in SF/F reading and 80s comics, in favor of exposition. (Up to a POINT!) When I was forced to read Literary Novels in college, one of the things I objected to was that nothing is explained, you're left to fumble about. Now, I've read more and more widely over the years, and sometimes I appreciate that fumbling feeling. But I do spend the time wondering what I'm *missing*, and whether its important.

MN requires that, at age 7, you get testing -- but it doesn't require that you turn those results in . . .

I've had Larsson's books on my 'to-read' list for a while and definitely want to get to them.

About the issue of reading something that was written in a different language/for a different culture -- that's how we learn about our own, right? By picking up on other people's references by osmosis; I always prefer immersion to straight-up exposition, at least for starters, the same way I prefer reading books that were written in a period to historical fiction -- there's a little eavesdroppers' thrill to it, learning how people would talk to their peers without having to translate every little nuance.

Our state requires standard testing for all kids in public schools including distance ed programs like the one we use starting third grade. My problem comes in that we are doing third grade this year even though by state records he's second. I don't know if I should test this spring or wait until next year.
