The Next Big Thing

So, Michael Thomas tagged me to be “part of a chain of book and author recommendations called THE NEXT BIG THING.” In which authors and editor discuss their forthcoming projects. This is a bit of a pickle, since my next big thing is the SAME as Michael’s Next Big Thing, namely Queers Dig Time Lords. Which means if you click on the link above, he’s covered it.

But, I have another Big Thing forthcoming, so I’ll discuss them both.

1) What is the working title of your next book?

I’m co-editing Queers Dig Time Lords with Michael. I’m also editing the forthcoming Kelly Sue DeConnick and Emma Rios project, Pretty Deadly.

2) Where did the idea come from for the book?

Um, what did Michael say?

“The idea for an LGBTQ version of Chicks Dig Time Lords originated with Doctor Who podcaster Erik Stadnik. He thought it should exist, but didn’t want to edit it. He pitched the idea to Mad Norwegian Press.” Mad Norwegian asked me, and I asked Michael.

As for Pretty Deadly, Kelly Sue and Emma wanted to do a western. If you follow Emma Rios on Tumblr, you will see a whole host of great images and art. Scattered among those are secret messages and preview glimpses of the Pretty Deadly look and feel.

3) What genre does your book fall under?

QDTL is an essay anthology. PD is a western comic book.

4) What actors would you choose to play the part of your characters in a movie rendition?

I … what? QDTL is a non-fiction essay anthology. PD is … it’s a comic, and I’ve seen some fantastic art for it, but I don’t want to affect what people might think of the characters. Particularly while only the teaser art is public. Well, here you go:

Go on, y’all can cast her!

5) What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

QDTL is the manifest evidence that Doctor Who has always had queer fans.

6) Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

QDTL is from Mad Norwegian. PD is from Image Comics.

7) How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript?

QDTL took over a year to piece together. PD is still in progress, comics working slightly differently.

8) What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

QDTL is a companion to the other Geek Girl Chronicles, Chicks Dig Time Lords, Whedonistas, Chicks Dig Comics, and Chicks Unravel Time. Give those a look-see!

9) Who or what inspired you to write this book?

Working on Chicks Dig Comics was a rewarding experience. It made sense to do another such collection.

I was asked to be a part of Pretty Deadly, I think because I am a decent hand at herding cats. I’m an air traffic controller, a homeschooling parent of two, I’ve edited two essay anthologies, and I have successfully made sure Kelly Sue has gotten to panels on time at two conventions.

10) What else about the book might pique the reader’s interest?

Queers Dig Time Lords is an absolutely love letter to Doctor Who and, even more so, DW fandom. If the idea of a found community of like-minded folks appeals to you, you will enjoy this collection.

As for Pretty Deadly? Pinky violence. Sam Peckinpah. Mytho-poetic American West. Women of few words and lethal action.

I hope you enjoyed this Next Big Thing!

Um, hello, famous person who is my friend. O.o

  2. Hah, yeah, well, *editing*. Kelly Sue and Emma are the ones doing the heavy lifting.

  3. Kelly Sue DeConnick, Emma Rios, and my college roommate on one project? That is so excellent!
