I wish that action movies would return to filming fight scenes the way musical dance numbers used to be filmed. Long takes, full body in frame. I mean, I understand that part of what the choppy editing does is create a sense of urgency and confusion and drama. But there is a different sense of drama generated by knowing that actual human beings are doing the things we can see.
Which, I suppose, is a great deal of the point — actual human beings cannot always do the things we find cool in fight scenes.
Still, FX have advances a great deal. If we can fake Mark Ruffalo turning into a giant green troll-man and punching a space shark in the face, surely we can fake a good fistfight?
