2014 didn’t suck

I see a lot of “good riddance to 2014” sentiment going around, and I understand. The last year saw a lot of distressing things — for me personally, for friends and loved ones, for communities I cherish, for the world.

But it also contained great joy. Triumph and new experience and new life and marvelous people.

2014 didn’t suck.

Ramez Naam says it really well.

Vox.com says much the same thing.

And I, personally, well — I’m sort of an optimist. I am a fretful, worrying, plan-for-disaster optimist. I look back at 2014 and think, “goodness, that could have been SO MUCH worse! I’m glad it wasn’t!”

And I am. Glad. I am genuinely glad and grateful and pleased with the last year.

For one thing, without the last year, I wouldn’t be who I am and where I am today. And I like me. So there’s that.

2014 could have been worse. I’m looking forward to 2015.

See you on the flipside, Internets.
